The art of Superbowl advertising

Bit of an off topic post today. The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Superbowl on Sunday, and at halftime the battle was on for the best Superbowl advert. It's alledgedly the most expensive airtime in the World so the adverts have to be good! Here are a couple of my favourites - you can't beat a bit of slapstick comedy followed by bugs. You can vote for your favourites at a special YouTube Adblitz site. Voting closes soon though so hurry!

DX Crop mode masking on the D700

Moving from a DX sensor Nikon SLR (D80, D200, D300 for example) to a full frame version? You've probably got a few DX lenses in your kit bag. These lenses are produced and optimised for the smaller size sensors and when you stick one on a full frame body the resolution is reduced. Nikon launch GPS add on

From Nikon's InFrame email update: Nikon's GP-1 Global Positioning System records the exact location of your camera when you take a shot, giving you truly accurate records. The GP-1 can be mounted unobtrusively on the camera strap or accessory shoe and, when connected to the GPS supporting D90, D700, D3x, D3 and D300 cameras, it automatically records latitude, longitude, altitude and time as geotags in the image data. Geotagging gives you the option of filing images by location, and enables them to be used with mapping applications such as Google Maps. The GP-1 RRP is £202.99. For more information...

More Canon price rises for February

Amateur Photographer reports today that Canon prices will rise by another 10% from today due to fluctuating exhange rates. It's the second set of price rises this year, and it's being announced at the same time as a 67% loss of profit in their camera division. Nikon have also raised their prices once this year (My D700 currently costs £150 more than I paid for it in early December). Canon have promised to monitor the exchange rates on a monthly basis and react accordingly. You can't help but think that market conditions will dictate and that prices of the mass-market cameras will drop sooner...

How to get away with trainspotting

Train of thought - 1/50th sec at f/5.6, ISO 1400 Contrary to popular belief, there is a way to spend time at a railway station, camera in hand, and not be treated like an anorak-burdened geek. Take a small child with you, preferably cute, with a limited but increasing vocabularly. Having helped me retrieve wood and coal from the garage little Harry wasn't finished with the outdoors, despite the cold. So off we wandered, camera in hand, and Harry decided that he wanted to look at trains. I didn't take any shots of trains (honest!) but I liked the symmetry of the shelter frame with the bench - Harry's...
